The United States will begin accepting applications for the Diversity Visa 2009 Lottery beginning today, Wednesday, 03 October 2007. Entries may be submitted electronically after 12 noon East Coast time for the U.S. The application period will end at 12 Noon Eastern Standard Time on Sunday, 03 December 2007. 

The Australian state of Victoria has published its updated skilled migration strategy. Entitled "Global Skills for Victoria," it lays out plans for 2008 through 2011. The territorial government hopes to increase its share of migrants from 26.8% to 28.5% by 2011.

A new study released by the British Council ranks 25 European Union states, plus Norway, Switzerland, and Canada, according to how well they integrate immigrants. The UK ranks 5th in several key categories, and ranks overall 9th as "most favorable" toward immigrants. The only category Britain didn't score in the top half was in "Political rights," where it came in 15 out of 28 countries. The study also notes that the UK could improve family reunification.

The European Union Commission has laid out its proposal for a "Blue Card" residence and work permit. Designed to attract highly skilled immigrants from around the world to Europe, the proposal must now be debated and agreed upon by all 27 Member States before it can come into effect.
