American movie star Matt Damon has told the British national broadcaster The BBC that his new film, Elysium, is a metaphor for immigration. Mr Damon was speaking to the BBC television's Breakfast programme.

A Russian politician has accused two American pop stars, Lady Gaga and Madonna of breaching Russian visa rules. Vitaly Milonov, a member of the St Petersburg assembly, claims that the two stars separately visited Russia with cultural visas which did not permit them to undertake paid work. They then both gave concerts for which they were paid.

Pope Francis has travelled to the island of Lampedusa to make a speech calling for an end to the 'globalisation of indifference'. He said that the west has a 'brotherly responsibility' to look after refugees and migrants and asked for forgiveness for the indifference that allowed their suffering.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development has released its International Migration Outlook for 2013. The report shows that the level of immigration in OECD countries is rising but remains lower than it was before the economic crisis of 2007. Permanent immigration to OECD countries rose by 2% in 2011 and by a further 2% in 2012. It also finds that the number of international students continues to rise. There were over 2.6m such students in 2010.

A new report has found that the US, the UK and Australia are the three preferred destinations for professionals around the world seeking to relocate for work. The US was the top destination last year too. The UK has risen to take second place from Australia, which is third.
