The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) believes that Syrians will soon make up the largest refugee population on earth. Syrian refugees are expected to outnumber displaced Afghans within the next few months.

There are currently 2.3m Syrians who have left the country to avoid the civil war. About 100,000 more are leaving the country each month. It is believed that around 2.58 Afghans are currently living outside Afghanistan as refugees. This number is falling slowly from a highpoint of 6m in the 1990s.

A new survey of the world's top universities has found that 28 of the top 100 are to be found in the United States and a further 17 are to be found in the UK. There are also four Canadian and seven Australian universities in the top 100 as well as one in New Zealand.

A report into the conditions of migrant workers helping Qatar prepare for the football World Cup in 2022 has found that they are being treated like slaves. Some have had their passports taken away by their employers, and others have not been paid. 44 workers from Nepal died in the hostile working conditions of the Qatari summer between June 4th and August 8th 2013. Some 30 Nepalis have entered the Nepali embassy in the Qatari capital Doha seeking refuge.

The Indian offices of Global Visas closed without warning on 20th September 2013. Global Visas had two offices in India; one in Delhi and the other in Mumbai.

Local sources report that the offices have not been open since. There is no information about the closures of their Indian offices on the Global Visas website. Global Visas was founded by Liam Clifford a former UK immigration officer.

The chief executive of the world's largest advertising agency, WPP, has said that the UK and the US need skilled immigrants to provide the staff for many different sectors of the economy including the technology sector. Sir Martin Sorrell says 'If the UK wants more Sergey Brins, (Sergey Brin co-founded Google), Andy Groves (Andy Grove co-founded Intel) and Elon Musks (Elon Musk co-founded PayPal and SpaceX) and the UK wants some of its own, there needs to be an enlightened approach to policy'.

The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) has said that more than 6m people have now been displaced from their homes because of the civil war. Of these, over 2m have fled the country and are now living abroad, mostly in the countries surrounding Syria. There is no sign of an end to the conflict and the UNHCR says that more refugees are expected.
