US H-1B visas are still available to start work in the US from 1 October 2010.  There are 65,000 H-1B visas available each year with an additional 20,000 available for those with an US master’s degree or higher.

USCIS announced that on 21 May 2010 19,600 out of the 65,000 visas available for those without an advanced degree had been used and that 8,200 visas out of the 20,000 available for those with a US Masters Degree or higher had been used.

Australian Immigration Minister Chris Evans has said recently that that there are still a number of immigration options available for highly qualified chefs and cooks.  Immigration Minister Evans went onto say:

"The removal of the classifications for chefs and cooks from the Skilled Occupation List will not affect the ability of restaurateurs to bring in qualified staff to meet demand in the industry."
‘We have reformed the skilled migration system to allow employers to target the skills they need in their businesses.

‘Employers can nominate chefs and cooks on 457 visas, employer-sponsored visas and the new State migration plans.’

US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced recently that they were now issuing a newly designed Permanent Resident Card, known as the “Green Card” with a number of new security features. New technology makes counterfeiting and tampering of the card more difficult.
