Students with an F-1 visa in the United States may now take immediate advantage of changes, announced in April this year, to the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program. The period of the OPT program has been extended from 12 to 29 months and allows certain F-1 visa students to work in the U.S. in occupations related to their field of study. New statistics from the United Kingdom's Home Office indicate that the number of Eastern European Union workers applying to register under the Worker Registration Scheme has dropped to its lowest level since 2005. From January through March of 2008, 45,000 applications were lodged by nationals of the eight EU countries that joined the bloc in May 2004.
