Hundreds of thousands of immigrant workers are trying to stay in the United States. The wait is often long.

The backlog of foreign workers seeking green cards, which allow immigrants to live and work in the United States permanently, numbers more than 330,000. In September, the Department of Labor set up centers in Philadelphia and Dallas to quicken the first step of processing for employment-based green cards.

It is usually a good thing that a group of people is considered highly employable in the United States. But not when the people are illegal immigrants, and the reason they're employable is because they're exploitable.

The UK Home Secretary on 21 July announced that Suzanne McCarthy will be the next Immigration Services Commissioner. She succeeds John Scampion, who completed his term of office in May 2005. Mrs McCarthy will take up her position on 5 September 2005.

The UK public is being consulted about a new, proposed immigration system. Legislation going through Parliament will create a points-based entry system with five "tiers" of immigration.

Lawmakers in the United States Senate introduced legislation designed to stem a flood of illegal immigration across America's southern borders. The bill also establishes a temporary worker program, creating a new visa category that allows foreign workers to enter the United States to work for up to two years when there are no available US workers.
