The Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) has made further recommendations for additions to the shortage occupation list. The MAC feels that Teachers in special schools and skilled meat boners and trimmers and certain other occupations should be added to the shortage occupation list.

On 12 October the Scottish Qualifications Authority English language tests were added to the lists of approved English language tests, for Tier 1 and Tier 2 visa applications.

On 17 September 2009 The UK Border Agency confirmed that phase 3 of the student Tier 4 of the points-based system for immigration will start on 5 October 2009.
