The cost of a UK tourist visa has increased to £100, sparking outrage across the British tourism sector. The London Tourism Recovery Board said: “Anything that makes the UK less affordable than our near neighbours is a barrier to recovery.” The increase represents a 5.3% rise and comes at time when Britain’s tourism sector is still recovering from the impact of COVID-19.

Eight unnamed Russian oligarchs who entered Britain on Tier 1 investor visas have been placed on a UK sanctions list amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on 24 February. Dubbed the ‘golden visa’ route because it allowed wealthy individuals to buy their way into Britain through investment, the Tier 1 investor visa route was closed earlier this year.

 

The Home Office has announced a UK visa extension scheme for Ukrainian nationals already living in Britain. The immigration extension is in addition to the recent family visa scheme and ‘Homes for Ukraine’ scheme. Under the extension scheme, Ukrainians already living in Britain will be allowed to remain in the country for a further three years.

 

Two million EU citizens are reportedly at risk of deportation from the UK because of their temporary immigration status, according to the Oxford Migration Observatory. Based at Oxford University, the Migration Observatory has warned that EU citizens with pre-settled status face removal from Britain.

 

Positive Action in Housing, a charity supporting Ukrainian refugees, claims that not a single UK visa has been issued to people that they are helping. Despite the launch of a new scheme nearly two weeks ago, which allows individuals, charities, community groups and businesses to provide refuge for those seeking safety, many have been left to find help elsewhere.
