Visitors' visa

The South African Visitors' visa allows travellers to enter and travel through South Africa for up to 90 days for several purposes; including some types of work. If you wish to enter South Africa for more than 90 days you should apply for a different visa type. Please see our South Africa Immigration page for more details.

Purpose of visit

South African Visitors' visas may be granted for the following purposes:

  • Tourism
  • Visiting family and friends
  • Visiting family on South African work or study visas
  • Study that lasts less than 90 days
  • Business purposes that last less than 90 days
  • Charity and voluntary work
  • Academic research
  • Attending conferences
  • Working in the entertainment industry producing a film or performance
  • Working at a sports event
  • Receiving vital or life-saving medical treatment 


Length of stay

South African Visitors' visa can be issued for a maximum of 90 days.


Eligibility requirements

  • A completed copy of South African visa application form BI-84 
  • Two separate passport photographs
  • A passport that is valid for at least 30 days after the expected end date of the visa
  • A written statement or other documents confirming the purpose and expected duration of their visit
  • A vaccination certificate if the applicant is planning to travel from or through a Yellow Fever risk area
  • A return/onwards travel ticket, or proof that one has been reserved
  • If the applicant will be attending an event:
  • A letter from the event's organisers confirming the applicant's involvement, AND;
  • Confirming whether and how much the applicant will be paid for their involvement
  • If the applicant is including dependent children on their visa:
  • A full birth certificate for each child, AND;
  • Proof of legal custody, OR;
  • A letter of consent from the child's legal guardians
  • Proof of maintenance funds for the trip, such as bank statements or travellers' checks
